Granite Repair & Restoration

Granite is a natural igneous rock composed mainly of quartz, feldspar and other minerals. As a countertop material, it’s cut from large slabs of quarried stone, polished or honed, and commonly installed in kitchen and bathroom settings. The fact that each slab is unique in color variation and pattern is one of its main aesthetic appeals.

Granite Used in the Home

  • A big reason is its visual appeal. Granite offers a wide range of colors and patterns, from deep blacks to light speckled granites, allowing it to complement many kitchen or bath styles.

  • It is also known for being very durable, which makes it a preferred surface for high-traffic areas like kitchen countertops.

  • Because it’s natural stone, it often adds perceived value to a home and can appeal to buyers who prefer “real stone” finishes rather than synthetic or engineered surfaces.

  • The many slab varieties mean it can serve both practical and aesthetic roles including everyday use and a more elevated kitchen design.

Granite Durability

  • Granite is extremely hard and dense compared to many other countertop materials. It resists scratches, chips, and general wear quite well.

  • It has good heat resistance: hot pans placed briefly on it is generally safe.

  • With proper care (cleaning, sealing, minor repairs), granite countertops can last for decades.

  • That said, natural stone is not maintenance-free. Granite is porous to some degree, so sealing and proper care are required to prevent staining, moisture infiltration, or dulling over time.

Granite Maintenance

Because granite is porous, most countertops need to be sealed periodically. We recommend resealing every 1-2 years depending on usage and the specific stone.

  • On a day-to-day basis, cleaning simply involves mild dish soap and warm water (or a PH-balanced, stone-specific cleaner) with a soft cloth. Harsh chemicals, acidic cleaners (like vinegar or lemon), and abrasive pads should be avoided because they can damage the seal or dull the stone.

  • You’ll also want to immediately wipe up spills (especially oil, wine, or acidic foods) to reduce staining risk.

  • Over the long term, if the surface becomes dull or slightly worn, it's time to call a pro to clean, reseal, and polish the stone to refresh the finish.

  • In short: once it’s installed, maintenance is relatively manageable compared to softer stones, but it’s not "set it and forget it."

Granite Applications

  • Kitchen countertops: Because of its durability, heat resistance, and attractive finish, granite is a top choice for full kitchen countertops where food prep, cooking, and traffic all happen daily.

  • Bathroom vanities: Granite works well in bathrooms where a stone surface is desired and durability is demanded.

  • High-traffic surfaces: Areas like islands, breakfast bars, or other surfaces where you want both strength and aesthetics.

  • Value-adding installations: If you’re planning to sell or want materials that hold up well and look premium, granite is appealing.

  • It may be less ideal (or require more care) in settings where extremely delicate finishes are relied upon (very light marble-like surfaces) or where sealing is likely to be overlooked.
